At Westercon 67, you will find many different events and attractions, some familiar to you, some imported from CONduit, and some imported from past Westercons and other conventions. For those who may be unfamiliar with some of these terms, we have defined them below. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions, if you have a better description, or think there something else we should add to the list.
The art auction allows people to bid on works from the art show which have either received enough bids to go to auction (usually 3-4 bids), items which have been donated for charity, and items specifically chosen by the art show staff. You will need a bidder number (free from the art show!) to bid.
The art show displays art sent in and brought by artists from all over. You will need to have a free bidder number to bid on works displayed in the show. There will be 35-50 different artists displaying original and limited edition paintings, sculptures, and other works. Those displaying will include amateur artists, semi-professional artists, and professionals who have been in the business for years.
Often shortened to “BOF”, and also called a “roundtable discussion”. A BOF is an informal discussion among fans on a specific topic. There is usually a leader or moderator who helps the discussion stay on topic and who also keeps any one fan from dominating the discussion.
A kaffeeklatsch is an informal gathering, usually with one of the guests or another well-known person, where the participants have an informal conversation on topics of interest.
KidCon is a track of programming aimed specifically at younger fans (usually those under about 12 years old). There will usually be craft workshops and presentations, readings, and sometimes even panels.
The Masquerade is the staged costuming contest. Participants will often have a very short skit (maybe 1-2 minutes at the long end) which helps them present the costume to the judges and audience. There will be awards for different levels of mastery for presentation and workmanship.
A panel is an event, usually about one hour long, where a small number of experts on (or at least people very familiar with) a topic will discuss the topic of the panel, sometimes with input from the audience. There will usually be a moderator who keeps the panel on track and makes sure any one panelist doesn’t dominate and take all the time.
A presentation is an event where one or more individuals give a presentation on a topic. Many presentations will include videos, slideshows, and/or props to help the presenter(s) explain the topic. There will often be a question and answer period at the end of the presentation (or even sometimes during the presentation).
At a reading, an author will read one or more selections from one or more of their works. There will sometimes be a discussion of the selection, or perhaps a question and answer period at the end.
A workshop is a focused and interactive presentation where the instructor teaches the participants how to do something (an aspect of writing, writing in general, an artistic technique, editing, and so on). Class size is usually very limited and will often require advance registration. In some cases, material may be required to be submitted ahead of time in cases where the instructor may be critiquing the work of the participants. There is sometimes a fee in addition to the registration fee for the convention.
